How to Keep Your Caravan Cool During a Heatwave
Park Smart
Where you position your caravan can make a big difference.
If you have the choice, look for a pitch that offers afternoon shade from trees or nearby hedges. The afternoon sun is usually the hottest part of the day, so reducing direct sunlight on your caravan can help keep internal temperatures lower.
If there is little natural shade, consider which side of your caravan receives the most sun and position it accordingly.
Make the Most of Your Rooflights
Rooflights are excellent for ventilation, but timing is important.
During the hottest part of the day, keep rooflights closed if they are in direct sunlight. Opening them can allow hot air to enter the caravan.
Early in the morning and later in the evening, open the rooflights along with windows on opposite sides of the caravan to create a natural flow of cooler air.
If your rooflights have built in blinds, keep these closed during the day to reduce heat entering from above.
Keep Your Caravan Windows Covered
Glass allows a surprising amount of heat into a caravan.
Close blinds and curtains before the sun reaches each window rather than waiting until the caravan has already heated up.
For even better results, use external thermal window covers. These reflect sunlight before it reaches the glass, making them far more effective than internal blinds alone.
Improve Your Caravan Fridge's Performance
Caravan fridges often struggle during very hot weather because they rely on outside ventilation.
Check that the exterior fridge vents are clean and free from leaves, dust or other obstructions. Good airflow helps the cooling system work much more efficiently.
Avoid opening the fridge door unnecessarily, as every opening allows warm air inside and forces the fridge to work even harder.
Create Shade with an Awning
An awning does more than provide extra living space.
By shading one side of your caravan, it reduces the amount of direct sunlight hitting the walls and windows, helping to keep the interior cooler.
Keep the awning well ventilated by opening the doors during the day. This prevents hot air becoming trapped against the side of the caravan.
Keep Your Fresh Water Cool
Your fresh water container can become surprisingly warm if it sits in direct sunshine all day.
Position your Aquaroll or water container in the shade whenever possible. Covering it with a light coloured towel can also help reduce how much heat it absorbs.
Cooler water is much more refreshing on a hot day.

Empty Waste Water More Regularly
Heat speeds up bacteria growth inside waste water containers.
During a heatwave, empty your grey waste container more frequently than usual and rinse it out regularly. This helps prevent unpleasant smells developing around your pitch.
Protect Your Caravan Tyres
Long periods in strong sunshine can affect caravan tyres over time.
If you are staying on one pitch for an extended period, tyre covers can help protect the rubber from prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays while your caravan is parked.
Reduce Heat from Electrical Appliances
Televisions, chargers, laptops and other appliances all generate heat inside a compact caravan.
Turn off anything you are not using and switch to LED lighting if you have not already done so. Every little reduction in heat helps make the interior more comfortable.
A Simple DIY Cooling Hack
One easy trick many caravanners swear by is freezing several bottles of water before your trip.
Place one in front of a small fan during the hottest part of the day to create cooler airflow inside the caravan. Once the ice has melted, you have chilled drinking water ready to enjoy.
It is an inexpensive trick that can make a noticeable difference on particularly hot afternoons.
Stay Comfortable Throughout the Heatwave
A caravan will always warm up faster than a traditional home, but a few simple changes can make a significant difference. Choosing the right pitch, improving ventilation, keeping your fridge working efficiently and using practical cooling tricks can all help you stay comfortable throughout your holiday.
With a little planning, you can spend less time trying to escape the heat and more time enjoying everything your caravan holiday has to offer.
