Motorhome driving licence requirements

This is often the first question we get asked! The type of driving licence you need depends on the motorhome’s Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM), which is its weight plus the maximum load it can carry:

  • Under 3,500kg (3.5 tonnes) MAM: If you passed your standard (Category B) driving test after 1 January 1997, you are typically limited to driving vehicles up to 3,500kg MAM. Most smaller, modern motorhomes fall into this category.
  • Between 3,500kg and 7,500kg MAM: If you passed your test before 1 January 1997, you likely have “grandfather rights” (Category C1 entitlement) automatically included on your licence, allowing you to drive vehicles in this weight range. However, if you passed after this date and want to drive a motorhome over 3,500kg, you’ll need to take an additional test to gain the C1 licence. This involves a medical examination, theory tests, and a practical driving test.
  • Over 7,500kg MAM: For the largest motorhomes, such as some American RVs, you’ll need a Category C licence, which is a full HGV licence.

It’s vital to check your driving licence thoroughly before purchasing. We can help you identify the MAM of any motorhome you’re interested in, ensuring it aligns with your licence entitlements.
